If you are wondering where I am, my radio station is about to ring in
2013 in Scott City, Rossland.
I find that fans here in Rossland do use my proxy to access
streaming media. On my server, there are two kinds of
proxies, a standard HTTP proxy, and a VPN proxy.
It turns out that one one scientific research station here
the country, operated by the USA's NSF, streaming
media is VERBOTEN. While here in Rossland, I have
found there are employess at the research station using
my VPN to hide it from the boss when they want to tune
in to internet radio stations including mine. The only thing
the base commander will see in the logs is that someone
made an encrypted connection to my proxy. I have
found the logs, that Pandora and Live 365 are also
popular for at-work listening by employees at the
research station. Here in Rosslaland, they are one
of the biggest employers. Its not just scientists
that work there, the base creates a lot of other
jobs that support the local ecnomy. Cooks,
mechanics, computer technicians, and a lot
more people owe their employment to the US
choosing to have their only antarctic station in
the country. During the Austral summer, the base
is a major factor in the economy here.
I am broadcasting from a nearby ski resort,
where there are also a lot of holidaymakers
from Australia and NZ here for some summer
skiing. While I have been here, I have found
some base employees here who LOVE my
VPN, and the fact they can tune into streaming
media with the boss knowing about it, even
figure skating fans tuning into online broadcasts
of skating events and all the boss sees is a
bunch of encrypted nonsense. And since the
base is now a bring-your-own-device (BYOD)
employer, it makes it impossible to detect what
is going on, and since the device is employee
owned, the employer cannot put keylogger
or other monitoring software on the device,
so if the connection is encrypted, they cannot
find out what is going on on an employee-owned
device. The resort is about 30 minutes drive
from Scott City.
While BYOD will save employers the cost
of having to buy new computers every few
years, it will also crate the problem of making
it that more difficult to monitor internet usage,
since they cannot install monitoring software
on employee owned devices, nor can they
control which programs are launched on
employee owned devices.
And contrary to what dgs and his
pals might say, it is NOT a criminal
offence to bypass your employer's
firewall under either American or
Rosslandic laws, so don't get me
started on that one. In other words,
employees who use my any of my
proxies cannot be criminally prosecuted
under either American or Rosslandic laws.
And here is something else that Terry
and his minions at PDXISS will NOT
want to hear. It turns out that computer
administrators there have decided to
make the PDXISS web site blocked
and off limits to employees at the
base. I have heard from figure skating
fans who work there that PDXISS is
blocked. I know that is something Terry
will NOT want to hear. It appears that
someone in IT absolutely HATES
Tonya and PDXISS annoys the hell
out of this guy.
